Summary on Grant Application Form |
Electron collisions with atoms and ions have been the subject of international interest for many years. However, relatively little accurate cross section data is known for many of the processes involved. A particularly promising is computational approach is the 2-dimensional R-matrix propagator, a variant of the general R-matrix approach that enables the accurate study of electron collisions with H-like atoms, and complex atoms with one electron outside a closed shell, at intermediate energies. In conjunction with the Belfast e-Science Centre a prototype Grid enabled version of the propagator, 2DRMP-G, has been developed to exploit the UK's Level 2 grid (UKL2G). However, as Grid technology opens up the opportunity to undertake larger cases it is essential to ensure that the numerical techniques employed are scalable, efficient and robust across a range of machines. The primary aim of this project is to develop robust and efficient formulae for numerical differentiation and quadrature that can exploit the specific nature of the 2-D method thereby opening up the possibility of undertaking electron collisions simulations that have hitherto been impossible.
