Summary on Grant Application Form |
Despite being regarded as on-line chromatograph in some industrial applications such as petrochemical and biochemical industries, little work can be found on NIR application to particle formation processes. This is mainly due to the fact that, unlike mid IR, NIR spectra can be seriously affected by the presence of solid particles in the solution. This phenomenon is an indication that the NIR spectra contain more information regarding the solid properties than just concentration. We will investigate a new mathematical technique called independent component analysis (also known as blind source signal separation) for automatic separation of the spectra regarding concentration as well crystal polymorph properties, and in doing so develop a NIR on-line technique for simultaneous measurement of the properties of both liquid and slid phases for pharmaceutical crystallisation processes. The work will be conducted on an industrial-scale pilot plant reactor (200 litre) which was donated by AstraZeneca to the Institute of Particle Science and Engineering at Leeds.
