Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is to fund a post-doctoral research assistant in the School of Engineering (Plymouth) to develop new methods for predicting the statistics of long term shoreline position in response to varying wave and water level conditions. The research will be supervised by the investigators, who have established track records of research in stochastic equations and are members of active and repected research groups. This project will involve the development of a new genre of mathematical models of coastlines evolving in response to random forcing. The approach will build on the new theoretical treatment developed by the investigators during a EPSRC Connectivity Fellowship. Work will initially focus on deriving solutions for the evolution of the statistical moments of shoreline position. For idealised cases the equations may be amenable to analytical solution. Numerical solution of the equations will be required for more general situations. Intensive validation tests will be undertaken to asess accuracy and computational efficiency. The models will be applied to real-life shoreline situations and comparisons made with published observations.
