Summary on Grant Application Form
Model theory studies mathematical objects from the viewpoint of mathematical logic: in particular, with reference to what can said about them in a given restricted, formal language. There is a rich interplay between pure model theory - the sophisticated and difficult techniques which have been developed internally within model theory - and the model-theoretic analysis of individual (or groups of) mathematical structures which arise in algebra and analysis. This Workshop is planned as a satellite meeting of the Newton Institute programme 'Model theory and applications to algebra and analysis' which runs from January to July 2005 in Cambridge. It will be followed by a conference at the Newton Institute 'Model theory, algebraic and analytic geometry' where the main themes will be the interactions between model theory and algebraic and analytic geometry. In contrast, the Workshop at UEA will focus on developments at the 'purer' end of model theory, without, of course, ignoring the connections with other branches of mathematics. The Workshop will bring together experts from a range of areas within model theory, enabling them explore possible interactions and new directions. The speakers are at the forefront of developments in pure model theory and the topics on which the Workshop will focus are among the most promising and interesting in the area.
