Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal aims to address the multi-disciplinary need for sub-micrometer scale non-destructive evaluation of bulk samples. New bench-top X-ray tubes are just becoming commercially available with sub-micrometer focal-spot sizes and it is proposed that these may replace the use of synchrotrons for producing sub-micrometer spatial resolution three-dimensional maps of electron density using X-ray tomography. An X-ray tube with a sub-micrometer focal spot size would also be capable of producing X-ray phase-contrast imaging, a technique which offers an enormous increase in contrast compared to standard X-ray attenuation measurement. This improvement in contrast is particular important in imaging very small organic objects (either living cells, or polymers) or objects which are made of low Z materials (such as aluminium oxide nano-particle assemblies). The commercially available X-ray tubes will also be customised to reduce the focal-spot size further and so increase the spatial resolution further. The project will reinforce the work already being conducted in this field at the University of Surrey, both in collaborations with the Soil Science Department, University of Reading and with the Chemical Process Engineering department, University of Surrey. The proposal will also provide a unique analytical tool to both UK academic institutions and to UK industry.
