Summary on Grant Application Form |
Within the last few years it has been discovered that methods from pure mathematics using the idea of approximating given data by ``analytic functions'', i.e., formulae of a particularly convenient kind, can be applied in a wide range of physical problems that are of interest to engineers: these include the modelling of linear systems (a branch of control engineering), the processing of signals, and, most recently fault detection in materials, including pipes, and even in medicine (scanning the brain). Surprisingly, we recently found a fundamental very abstract approximation theorem, which showed that the same theoretical methods could be applied in the study of a well-known open problem in pure mathematics (the invariant subspace problem for linear operators). The plan therefore is to carry on investigation in these two applications simultaneously, with two separate co-workers from France; on the one hand to look at the applications in fault detection and medical imaging, and on the other to look at the applications in pure mathematics. It is intended at the same time to develop new abstract theoretical results in approximation, and these will be adapted to other contexts.
