The properties of all inorganic solids are dramatically affected by the way atoms are packed together (ie, the order) within the solid state. Mixed metal oxides are an important class of inorganic materials that display many scientifically and technologically important properties. Ferroelectricity is one of these, whereby an electrical polarisation is created by the relative movements of atoms within a solid. This property finds many uses in, for example, capacitors, heat sensors and, more recently, information storage devices. A particular class of ferroelectric are called relaxors; these exhibit unusual and desirable properties which generally depend on mixtures of different cations on similar sites within the crystalline solid. A possible way to encourage this type of cation disorder is to 'design' it in using cooperative anion disorder. In this project we will design novel relaxors by fluorine-doping of a well-known class of mixed metal oxide ferroelectrics. Their detailed crystallographic structure, microstructure and physical properties will be studied using a variety oftechniques.
