Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research aims to develop a technique that allows the synthesis of metal nanoshapes (50-250 nm in crosssection and 5-50 nm thick) through the in-situ reduction of metal salts. These metal nanoshapes will then be treated with biological molecules or long chain hydrocarbons (alkane thiols) to form self-assembled 2 and 3-D structures. The ability to pattern a material (a ferroelectric thin film) at nanometre length scales through the use of e-beam writing and scanning probe techniques is well documented. As is the ability of these patterned surfaces to selectively reduce metal salts to the metal particles. Through a combination of these two distinct technologies it should be possible to make ten's of millions of metal nanoshapes from a singled patterned surface in one cycle. The ability of the ferroelectric surface to maintain the charge pattern after writing for an indefinite period of time means that the patterned surface could be used for a large number of cycles, therefore generating very large amounts of metal nanoshapes.
