Summary on Grant Application Form
New highly directional planar antennas for wireless LAN and fixed broadband systems are proposed based on recently discovered electromagnetic meta-materials. The proposed structures overcome bandwidth, cost and efficiency limitations of conventional microstrip array antennas. Passive periodic metallo-dielectric arrays will be modelled and designed that exhibit metamaterial properties at microwave frequencies, such as left-handed (LH) wave propagation, artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) properties and electromagnetic band gaps (EBG). These artificial metamaterial surfaces will be integrated with a simple primary printed antenna (e.g. microstrip patch) in order to produce low-profile, wide-bandwidth and high efficiency directive planar antenna designs. In particular it is proposed that the LH property will be utilised for bandwidth enhancement of the antenna, the AMC for the reduction of the profile and the EBG for reducing the backward radiation and the sidelobes. Non-uniform metamaterial array design will also be investigated in order to achieve tilting. and shaping of the main radiation beam of the antenna. A low complexity feeding system that uses a small number of primary sources will be studied for further gain enhancement. Prototypes of successful designs will be fabricated and tested.
