Bulk superconductors offer real potential for high current engineering applications due to their ability to trap magnetic fields significantly higher than the fields achievable with rare earth and iron-based ferromagnets. This proposal is for the development of novel and existing fabrication techniques for the processing of single domain (RE)BCO bulk superconductors in sizes and shapes required for electrical applications, in close collaboration with U.K. industry. Significant variations to the established top seeded melt growth processes and solidification schedules are required to achieve this aim. As a result, new approaches need to be evolved for achieving a stable growth front in samples of large cross sectional area and seeding techniques that yield single grains in complex geometries. Fundamental to these is the development of three main sub-processes:(i) preform shaping processes that yield complex shapes and large sizes with crack and pore-free uniformity; (ii) effective directional solidification and seeding melt processes and;(iii) optimisation of the superconducting properties of bulk samples for the target applications.This is an ambitious project that is based on the extensive and unique experience of the PI and SRA (Dr. Reddy) and on established collaboration with U.K. industry.
