Summary on Grant Application Form |
Prof Solin has pioneered work in the area of extraordinary magnetoresistance (EMR) which is a geometric effect in hybrid metal-semiconductor devices. Furthermore he has made seminal contributions to the fabrication of nanoscopic EMR magnetic sensors. The devices require thin high mobility semiconductors with the active layer at the surface. Imperial College has been developing such materials over the last few years, most recently as a result of an EPSRC processing grant. The overall aim of current proposal is to apply for funds for a visiting fellowship for Prof Solin, in order to take full advantage of the activities of common interest between his group at Washington University in St. Louis and ours. In particular Prof Solin's visits to Imperial College will be used to aid refinement of the methods for growing quasi-homogeneous ultra-thin narrow gap semiconductors with very high mobility at room temperature and to train local staff to process these materials at the nanoscopic and macroscopic scale. The processing of nanostructured electrical devices on the sub -100nm scale requires specialist expertise. The new London centre for nanotechnology will have the necessary facilities in place by 2005. Thus, this project is an ideal opportunity for the UK in terms of training.
