Summary on Grant Application Form |
This application is a direct consequence of an EPSRC Travel Grant awarded in 2003 for Randle to visit Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the USA to collaborate with Professor G Rohrer and to formulate a full research proposal. The Travel Grant was rated as 'outstanding'. The aim of the research programme proposed herein is to gain knowledge of five-parameter grain boundary crystallography and its links to properties in metals and alloys, and to apply this information to establish a better scientific basis for grain boundary engineering (GBE). The 'five parameter' analysis has been developed at CMU to measure grain boundary plane orientation in addition to grain misorientation. There are tremendous advantages to the adoption of the five-parameter analysis for GBE, namely full knowledge of the grain boundary crystallography for very large sample populations. A nanoindentation technique will be used to study the variations in hardness at and near various boundary types. These investigations, which are unique and provide an opportunity for the UK to take a lead in an exciting area, will in turn will have wider applications to understanding microstructure evolution in fcc metals and alloys in general, for example to elucidate what constitutes a 'special' boundary. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with CMU. The principal resource requirements are for a postdoctoral research assistant, travel money and specimen preparation equipment.
