Summary on Grant Application Form |
This collaborative research project aims to bring about a step-change in optical fibre technology by tailoring the novel properties of tellurite and chalcogenide glasses and using multiple core fibre designs to produce innovative devices. This is a highly adventurous project, which will be exploiting existing resources and expertise to show key demonstrators. Multicore fibre sensors will be investigated to exploit the excellent mid-infrared transmission properties of these tellurites and chalcogenides for applications in chemical sensing. These materials are also excellent hosts for optically active rare earth ions. This feature will be used in the design of multicore fibre amplifiers and multicore fibre laser devices. The large nonlinear refractive indices of these materials will also be exploited in device designs such as loss-less switching and modelocked laser systems. The proposed research on MCF starts with an in-depth knowledge of novel soft glass compositions, based on tellurite (Te02) and chalcogenide (GeS2), which we aim to use for their potential applications in multi-core fibre geometries. The types of fibres and devices, described in the case for support, have not been researched before. The project will therefore utilise the known glass systems for fibre fabrication and characterisation at Leeds. The fibres developed will be then used for devices developed at HW and Aston.
