Summary on Grant Application Form
Intersubband semiconductor lasers have become a topic of interest following the development of mid-infra-red (MIR) quantum cascade lasers (QCL) by Capasso whilst a staff member at AT&T Lucent. The worldwide effort on quantum cascade lasers continues to be led by the group founded by Capasso prior to his move to Harvard whilst' spin-off activities have been developed in Europe by Faist (Switzerland) and Sirtori (France). Notable work on intersubband lasers has been performed in the UK at Cambridge, Leeds, Glasgow, and Sheffield. The present project is sharply focussed on demonstrating the scope for using the nonlinear optical properties of intersubband transitions to provide wide-band intersuband laser tunability - a capability which thus far has not been readily achievable in intersubband lasers. The design work to be undertaken here will be performed with a clear view to subsequent experimental demonstration and hence significant attention will be given to the provision of a comprehensive device design specification and performance prediction..
