Summary on Grant Application Form |
A significant portion of the funding for the Cambridge Engineering Design Centre is provided by the EPSRC via a block grant. Due to the size of the EDC, now about 50 staff and students, there is a significant management overhead that distracts the staff from research. In addition it has been reconised that a more coordinated and visable effort is needed to define longer-term research objectives, to form these into a strategy and to maintain that strategy. Finally, better mechanisms of knowledge and technology transfer need to be developed. More specifically the project may be summarised under the following headings:General Management Assisting the Director to develop and monitor the EDC as an effective, economically viable, technical enterprise. Helping with recruitment of staff and students. Helping the EDC's staff identify funding opportunities and assisting them with the preparation of research proposals. Strategic Issues Working with senior staff to document and maintain a strategy for the Cambridge EDC, this shall include: direction, technical scope and financial aspects. In future years this shall also include integrating the EDC within a network of appropriate Grand Challenges. Running the EDC's Steering Committee and developing sub-committee groups to advise on individual research themes and or projects. Liasing with industry as needed to help define and further the research goals of the EDC. Technology Transfer Improving technology transfer by participation with existing industry events, both internal and external to the university, and by promotion ofEDC organised events. Assisting with the establishment of patents and exploitation routes for EDC IPR. Looking for opportunities and mechanisms to exploit and commercialise EDC know-how. Developing PR material and promoting the EDC.
