The proposed research will explore the role and way in which the screen - including the television, computer and digital screens, mobile and ubiquitous technologies - has shaped and informed our understanding of the social and cultural landscape. The main aim is to identify key forms and processes of communication related to the disciplines found in the Research Cluster comprised of artists and designers, computer scientists and engineers, and cultural historians. A series of three workshops and lectures (each over two days) will be held to facilitate the development of working methodologies of collaboration. The two-day event will be structured as follows: Day One: 'Analysis of Object' workshop and presentations (Research Cluster & invited guests); Lecture Series: 'Imagining the Real' (open to the public); Day Two: Feedback and analysis of workshop and lecture themes; action planning, development and agenda building.Workshops: Research Cluster participants will work in small interdisciplinary teams, consisting for instance, of an industry-based designer, cultural historian, sociologist, psychologist, semiotician, and a computer scientist. Teams will engage in exploratory discussion and 'object analysis' (e.g. mobile phones, wearable computers, architectural sites as screens, and artwork). The first workshop will focus on the deconstruction of a range designed objects, the second will focus on the redesign of 'objects', and the third will focus on the future and 'imagined objects' for a specific use.Public Lecture Series: 'Imagining the Real'. Three public lectures will be held to operate in conjunction with the planned workshops, in order to raise themes and points for discussion in relation to collaborative working. Each will draw upon the expertise of interdisciplinary 'visionaries' working internationally with a focus on the 'screen'.Analysis and Dissemination: Workshops and lectures will be video recorded and analysed to identify key themes emerging from the discussion that encapsulate the process and key themes of collaborative design and to provide exemplars of collaborative design to be made available on the Research Cluster web site.Interactive Web Site: An interactive website will be designed to disseminate video recordings and analysis of the themes of the workshops/object analysis. The website will include an online forum in order to extend and further develop the discussion and collaborative potentials of the Research Cluster. The design of the website will itself be a process of using and developing the principles of design established through the planned activities, and become an object of discussion and design among the research cluster.Exhibition: An exhibition on screen and design (2006) at a central London Venue (e.g. Design Museum or The Science Museum) and to travel outside the capital (e.g. Liverpool Film, Art and Creative Technology Centre]. The exhibition will be an interactive multimodal representation of the key ideas and themes that emerge from the activities of the Research Cluster. We will plan and seek funding for the exhibition as a collaborative activity within the Research Cluster.
