Recent developments have led to the production of SmCo-based permanent magnets with operating temperatures up to -500C. Previously the operating limit for these type of magnets had been 300C, where oxidation effects are insignificant for the lifetime of the magnet. However, it has been shown that at temperatures above 300C oxidation becomes significant with -10% loss in magnetic properties after exposure to air at 500C for 360 hours. Noexplanation of the oxidation mechanism has been provided nor characterisation of the oxidation product. It was clear, however, that the extent of attack was substantial with an oxidation zone of 270 microns having formed after 360 hours exposure at 550C.The first part of this proposal will be to characterise, by high resolution SEM/TEM and XRD, the oxidation behaviour and associated microstructure changes. The effect of these changes on the magnetic properties will be assessed using a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM).The second part of the proposal will be to study the effect of selected coatings (including silica and Pt) on the oxidation rate, with the aim of providing adequate protection for the magnets to be used at 500C in air, for the lifetime of a particular application.
