The proposed workshop will be organised to develop research opportunities between Chinese and UK organisations in the area of contaminated land management and remediation. Regulatory drivers in the UK have led to the development of a risk-based approach to remediation and for the prevention of on-going pollution that is amongst the best in the world. This approach has led to the implementation of low cost, sustainable remediation technologies that are also emerging as the most appropriate techniques for the Chinese environment. With the strong applied scientific and engineering expertise in China, there are therefore opportunities to develop these technologies to greater maturity with input from science and technology emerging from the research base of both countries.The workshop will give an overview of the regulatory frameworks in the UK and China, with a discussion on how risk-based approaches lead to more effective site investigation and remediation, followed by a discussion of the state-of-the-art in sustainable remediation technologies and a look at emerging science and processes (including molecular microbial techniques, stable isotopes, electrokinetic remediation, biosensors and approaches to treating recalcitrant pollutants such as PCBs and cyanides, including military applications such as mustard gas and explosives). This will lead to the identification of project areas leading to the development of joint research projects (at least 6 project proposals) and on-going collaboration and dissemination to the wider communities to enable on-going collaboration.
