Summary on Grant Application Form |
The discovery and development of catalysts has revolutionised our ability to produce molecules, from bulk to fine chemicals, for a myriad of uses in modern society. Asymmetric catalysis represents one of the most challenging areas of organometallic and organic chemistry for the production of chiral molecules, and there is a clear need to develop new catalysts capable of improving known reactions or catalysing new transformations. The proposed research aims to prepare, apply and develop a new class of chiral compound for direct application to asymmetric catalytic bond formation and as precursors to chiral ligands for metal-mediated asymmetric catalysis. Specifically hybrid chiral imidazolium salts will be investigated as organocatalysts for C-C bond formation using multiple hydrogen bonding between a carbonyl oxygen atom and a hybrid imidazolium catalyst. In addition new imidazolium salts will be used as N-heterocyclic carbene ligand precursors for metal mediated synthesis of chiral amines via hydroamination of alkenes.
