Summary on Grant Application Form
Many decisions involve whole numbers (integers) or Yes/No decisions e.g. how many machines should I buy, shall I do this or that. If we want to make the best decision (least cost, travel least distance etc.) we have a problem of DISCRETE OPTIMISATION. Often there are an enormous number of possibilities (Combinatorial Optimisation) and we have to represent the problem in a Computer by a 'model'. Even so it may take even the fastest computer too long to solve. By representing the problem in different ways we can sometimes make it possible to solve it in a shorter time.
