This proposal aims at breaking new ground in the field of oxidation catalysis, and in particular the synthesis and use of hydrogen peroxide. Oxidation reactions are extensively used in the fine chemicals and pharmaceutical industries to produce highly functionalised molecules but mainly using non-green stoichiometric oxidants, e.g. manganates and chromates. Hydrogen peroxide, formed directly from hydrogen and oxygen, provides a viable green alternative. We plan an integrated chemical engineering! chemistry approach to the design of new green technoology in which hydrogen peroxide is produced continuously and used in situ to oxidise suitable molecules. By using a narrow channel reactor some of the problems associated with low gas solubilites in liquids and safety can be overcome. This technology would be suitable for the selective oxidation of a broad range of molecules including alkenes, alcohols and phenols, and represent a step change in oxidation technology that will enable the UK to establish a world leading position in this field.
