A nanometre is a billionth of a metre, or in other words, if you imagine the whole population in China queuing in a single line and called the total length a 'metre', then the space occupied by an individual person would be about a nanometre. Science and technology on such a scale is likely to have significant impact in the twenty-first century.We have successfully fabricated alloyed magnetic nanowire arrays. The proposal is to study the magnetic properties of such novel materials using an element specific tool available at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Berkeley, USA, known as 'magnetic X-ray circular dichroism'. We have already been given the time to carry out the experiment using the synchrotron source at ALS. It will be the first time the powerful technique to be applied to this class of novel nanostructured materials and will help us understand a great deal more about the properties of the nanowire arrays.
