While the oxidation states I and III are very well known for rhodium and iridium, and their interconversion forms the basis for industrially important catalytic processes (for example acetic acid synthesis), the intermediate oxidation state II remains surprisingly rare and little investigated. Our recent studies have shown that stable rhodium(II) compounds can be synthesised by oxidising rhodium(l) complexes of ligands (called pyrazolylborates) which are capable of bonding by two or three nitrogen atoms. On oxidation of a rhodium(l) complex, in which the metal is usually bonded to only two nitrogen atoms of the ligand, the rhodium(II) state is stabilised by coordination of the third nitrogen atom.This project is designed to extend the scope of rhodium(II) chemistry by investigating the oxidation of rhodium(l) compounds of related ligands. Systematic variation of the structure of the ligand and its donor atoms, for example to sulfur, will allow us to control the stability and structure of the rhodium(ll) complex, and hence its reactivity. With one unpaired electron, the reactivity of a rhodium(ll) complex will be very different from that of complexes of the other oxidation states. Specific goals will include the activation of coordinated hydrocarbons, especially by reaction with oxygen. We will also extend this idea to other unusual oxidation states such as iridium(II), palladium(III) and platinum(III).
