Summary on Grant Application Form |
We are planning to organise in Manchester a high-profile 5-day research workshop focused on the physics of rotating superfluid liquids. The target number of participants is 50, i.e.. 25 UK and 25 foreign participants.Investigation of superfluids under rotation is the way to probe the quantum mechanics of ordered condensed matter systems on macroscopic scales, similar to investigation of superconductors in magnetic field. It also allows to study the multitude of vorticity-carrying stable defects of the systems with multicomponent order parameters. This is an active field of research on its own but has also direct connections with the physics of superconductivity, cosmology, classical hydrodynamics, turbulence and, more recently, rotating Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC).Representatives from all laboratories in the world, currently active in the research on rotating superfluids, will be invited to give talks. Some representatives of those mentioned connected fields will be invited too. There will be sessions covering all active directions of the physics of rotating superfluids as well as most traditional or emerging connected fields (especially BEC). Along with standard oral sessions, daily round-table discussions and informal interactions will be facilitated. The Proceedings of the Workshop, in the form of extended abstracts with references to original publications, will be posted on the Internet for general access.
