Particles of porous materials ere used in industry to catalyse chemical reactions. When the pores of in the particle ere large, typically greeter then 500 A, the bulk fluid is able to flow through the particle; this is whet we cell intraparticle convection. In this project, we aim to investigate the effects of intraparticle convection, along with diffusion, on the effectiveness of the chemical reaction. We shell use theoretical techniques developed in applied mathematics (scaling end perturbation methods) to describe the detailed behaviour of such e catalyst particle. These techniques will allow us to calculate the maximum temperature inside the particle for en exothermic reaction, to determine the type of temperature end concentration profiles, as well as the heat end mess transfer et the surface of the particle. This understanding will help us to design, operate end control catalytic reactors more efficiently.
