Summary on Grant Application Form |
A new model for droplet 'grouping' in an oscillating flow of gas will be developed. This model will explain the frequently observed tendency of droplets in sprays to form 'groups', that is the regions of increased droplet concentrations separated by the regions of their reduced concentration. This grouping is expected to affect many features of spray dynamics, including spray penetration, droplet evaporation and the ignition of fuel vapour/air mixture in internal combustion engines. The new model will take into account different sizes of droplets, their evaporation, and the influence of droplets on gas. The model will be validated using experimental data on oscillating sprays which will be obtained at the University of Brighton. It is anticipated that the new model will enable researchers to gain an in-depth understanding of the fine structure of spray oscillations, including those observed in direct injection internal combustion engines. This in-depth understanding of the phenomenon, in turn, will enable the developers to refine the design of these engines, via better control of the evaporation of droplets and the ignition of fuel vapour/air mixture.
