The project will develop and examine a mathematical model that describes how vegetation burns in bushfires, taking into account the combustible vapour produced as vegetation heats up sufficiently (pyrolysis), the vapourisation of water, and the way in which the combustible vapours burn at a high temperature with the oxygen of the air. The atmosphere above the vegetation provides fresh oxygen as well as carrying away buoyant hot gases that rise as a plume. The interaction of the fire with the wind in the atmosphere will need to be studied carefully because this is normally the most important factor that determines how the fire spreads. The parameters of the model will be determined in a way that best fits the data that is already known from observations and experiments on the behaviour of bushfires. The model will then provide a useful tool for future study of bushfires under conditions where experimental study is difficult or simply too dangerous.
