We plan to hold summer school as part of the Scottish Universities Summer School, in Physics (SUSSP) series. The School is the 60th in the SUSSP series and the 6th on the topic of laser-plasma interactions. It is also a NATO Advanced Studies Institute (ASI). The focus of the two-week summer school will be on the interaction of intense laser radiation with plasma. After covering the basic theory of the interaction of intense electromagnetic radiation fields with matter we will specialise in three applications of intense fields to plasma: i) inertial fusion; ii) wakefield accelerators; and iii) advanced radiation sources. These are amongst the most exciting and topical areas in the field of laser / plasma interactions, having developed rapidly over the past few years with the availability of very high power, short pulse lasers. The lectures will be designed to give students a thorough grounding in the basic concepts of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter and follow these up with selected advanced topics from the field. The objective will be to take the students to the brink of what we consider the most exciting challenges to give them a realistic glimpse of where current research trends are taking us. By covering several applications, it is hoped that the students will gain an appreciation of the underlying phenomena that link them together. We will also cover the diagnostic tools and experimental techniques that are used in these areas.
