Summary on Grant Application Form |
Project Proposal: a Virtual OxfordWe are inspired by the challenges ofactivity-oriented sensing and mapping, mixed robotand human sensing, passive ``ubiquitous'' sensing, and person-centred computing. What assistancecould we provide, for example, to a tourist incentral Oxford, where its buildings have beenmapped, where the streets are under camerasurveillance, and where the tourist is wearing acamera-phone, able to supply and receiveaudio-visual data?In the post-industrial robotics era,human-friendly and personal robotics of this sortis widely regarded as the grand challenge, whetheron the sensing side, or on the feedback/actuationside. It touches all the hard problems in makingcognitive systems --- perception, learning,decision-making autonomy, reliability, and so on.We propose to work on problems within thisarea that specifically link our areas ofexpertise, throughout using visual (and other sensor)geometry as a glue. We give several examples:- Large scale mapping- Higher Order mapping- Wearable visual computing- Memory Augmentation- Active Vision and Surveillance
