The communications infrastructure is rapidly evolving to provide a ubiquitous computing environment where processors will be everywhere and will be interconnected by a diverse array of networks, from ad-hoc to the global Internet. Such an infrastructure lays the foundations for offering a wide variety of electronic services to citizens. Illustrative examples of such services include: (i) content management and delivery for home entertainment; (ii) tele-care medical monitoring services for primary health care; (iii) city traffic management and road charging; (iv) on-line gaming; and (v) eGovernment.Service providers will be asked to design services that are expected to be highly complex. Increasingly, these will be constructed by dynamically composing them from varieties of other services (ranging from computational, storage, network to application level) provided by globally distributed service providers. They will face a number of challenges in providing services that offer quality of service guarantees, covering robustness, performance and security, with financial accountability to their consumers under specific terms and conditions.This is a Platform Grant proposal to support personnel and travel for the Distributed Computing Group, School of Computing Science, Newcastle University to address the above research challenges. The group is strong on experimental computing systems research, engaged in constructing realistic distributed systems to demonstrate the applicability of novel ideas on robust distributed computing. The group's strengths are in middleware for fault tolerant computing, large scale systems, distributed virtual environments and services for managing virtual organisations. The platform grant will provide cohesion and continuity of funding for a range of projects aimed at providing a unified service oriented environment for composing and supporting inter-organisational services as a set of dynamic, self-organizing services offering encapsulated independent functionality and acting in an autonomous manner.
