Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal seeks funding to support Dr D Prabhakaran for a period of 6 months. Dr Prabhakaran has outstanding skills in materials preparation, and is one of the world's leading experts in crystal growth by the floating-zone method. The crystals that Dr Prabhakaran grows have become central to a number of very successful ongoing research projects at Durham, UCL, Bristol and Oxford, as well as at other UK and overseas institutions. During the period of the grant he would prepare a wide range of oxides that are of interest because they exhibit novel electronic correlation effects. The materials to be prepared include manganites exhibiting orbital ordering phenomena, anhydrous sodium cobalt oxide (precursor to a novel triangular lattice superconductor), multiferroic manganites, and frustrated magnets. The samples will be investigated by neutron, x-ray and muon experiments to be performed at international facilities, and by magnetotransport experiments in Bristol and Cambridge.
