Summary on Grant Application Form
We have been awarded beamtime for soft x-ray magnetic dichroism studies of Ill-V ferromagnetic semiconductors at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley, California. This proposal is to fund travel to the facility in order to perform the experiment. We will exploit a unique octupole magnet facility, which allows full control over the external magnetic field vector, for combined x-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroism studies of state-of-the-art (Ga,Mn)As thin films. The flexibility offered by the octupole magnet as well as a variable polarisation undulator will allow us to perform combinations of measurements not possible at any other facility. The measurements will be used to quantitatively determine the magnetisation per Mn atom in (Ga,Mn)As, which is one of the key outstanding issues in the field of semiconductor spintronics, as well as probe the magnetic anisotropy and give valuable spectroscopic information on the nature of the Mn spin states. Two previous trips, supported by other funding, have been highly successful, demonstrating that our samples are compatible with the experimental set-up, and resulting in a publication in Applied Physics Letters.
