Summary on Grant Application Form |
Group theory is the mathematical study of symmetry. Just as every whole number is 'built' out of prime numbers, so every finite group is built out of basic objects called simple groups. In this project we plan to study the relationship between these simple groups and certain interesting infinite groups called Fuchsian groups which arise in the study of surfaces in geometry. There are lots of surprising connections between the two topics.
