'Kids4Kids - Talking About Science' will produce a science presentation ToolKit CDRom through which Year 8 students will generate science presentations on their favourite topics that they can then present to Year 7 students soon after they first arrive in their new secondary school.The TooKit CDRom will be developed to include a framework within which students create their presentation. Through ; research and revision of work they have done at school they will complete the initial pages, select graphics and simulations to illustrate their ideas and add in video clips of relevant demonstrations. They will complete the presentation with some material that relates the National Curriculum topic they are presenting to recent EPSRC research. They will, therefore, demonstrate the impact of research on their lives and how closely related cutting edge science is to the science they study at school. More ambitious students might develop their own graphics simulations or make their own video clips.The CDRom toolkit will be user-friendly and intuitive and will provide an archive of powerpoint pages to fill in, science simulations, animations and video clips to select and examples of relevant applications of EPSRC research to add on to the end. Through generating the presentation, students will revise their own science knowledge, improve their presentation and communication skills and learn more about how EPSRC research impacts upon their lives and links to the science they learn in school.The initial Year 7 audience members will then use the same ToolKit to generate their own presentations to present to younger pupils from their own primary schools when they visit as part of the Cross-Phase Induction Programme undertaken as a preparation for joining the secondary school.
