Summary on Grant Application Form
When a fluid moves faster than a critical speed the flow breaks down into a chaotic tangle of eddies and whirlpools known as turbulence. Developing an understanding of turbulence is an outstanding fundamental problem in physics. Turbulence is also a feature of superfluids, which are ultra-low temperature fluids that can flow without resistance. However, quantum turbulence is simpler to understand as the whirlpools have well defined quantum cores. This proposal will explore there properties of quantum turbulence in a new state of matter known as a Bose-Einstein condensate. An understanding of turbulence in Bose-Einstein Condensates will provide insight into what ways it behaves like classical turbulence in the world around us, such as the turbulence found in water and air. The project will also seek to establish some properties of quantum turbulence are unique to turbulence in superfluids. The results from the proposal will motivate future experiments in Bose-Einstein Condensates as well as provide insight into recent experiments that have explored superfluid turbulence.
