The University of Leicester's research strategy is focused on discovery-led world leading research, addressing the challenges affecting the planet, industry and society, and this applies to our postgraduate researchers (PGRs), their training and their experience while students here. Drivers of our strategy include the growth of our globally competitive research capabilities and capacity, applying our research to reinforce the development and growth aspirations of our regional and national economy, and delivering a nurturing environment which supports and develops our Post Graduate Researchers (PGRs) into future research leaders. The University of Leicester's research in Engineering and the Physical Sciences responds to these drivers by focusing on six key research themes which represent areas of recognised international reputation, research excellence and critical mass at the University of Leicester. These are (i) environment; (ii) materials; (iii) astronomy, space and earth observation; (iv) life sciences interface; (v) social sciences interface; and (vi) data analytics and computational modelling, which cuts across all of these other themes.
Studentship opportunities offered by our EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) are 3.5 years duration and will align to the following themes. These form the focus for this DTP:
(i) Materials: Priorities under this theme include processing, testing and modelling of materials, focused on their composition and properties, and design and manufacture of novel materials. This includes fundamental materials research at the molecular level, novel methods of testing and processing metals and minerals; and formulating and prototyping materials into shapes and components. Target sectors include aerospace, automotive, energy, transport, space, mining, hydrocarbons and forensics.
(ii) Astronomy, Space and Earth Observation: Leicester has specific and significant investments in space technology and Earth Observation (EO) research. A major new initiative is low cost access to space driving data services: to bring high volume production of satellite spacecraft to the UK and position the Midlands as a global centre for commercial exploitation of space-enabled data. A focus here is also to apply EO instrumentation and data analytics to the creation of innovative products, processes and services.
(iii) Life Sciences Interface: This theme connects basic research in the physical sciences with life science disciplines for the improvement of health and the study of biological function and/or disease. It is a hub for interdisciplinary work between physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, chemists and engineers, and biologists and medically relevant researchers.
(iv) Data Analytics and Computational Modelling: This theme brings together and enhances capabilities in mathematical and computational modelling and data analytics across the institution.
Training is core to our strategy for PGR students and sits alongside the research excellence we offer. We recognise that we are training the next generation of engineers, physical scientists and researchers. The newly-formed Doctoral College at Leicester offers training programmes and opportunities for PGRs to both, deliver a high-quality research output, and also develop a portfolio of skills and capabilities that can be used outside academia, which includes provision of placements and work experience in industry. As part of our research strategy, we are committed to delivering a nurturing environment which supports and develops our researchers and future research leaders. We see this DTP cohort as key to galvanising the research of our early career academics, and delivering research and outputs that offer impact, and address societal and global challenges.
