Summary on Grant Application Form |
A multi-technique approach to the determination and understanding of surface structures, primarily adsorbates on metal surfaces and alloys, including ultra thin overlayers, wil be developed building on existing specialised expertise and strengths but also exploiting new instrumental opportunities. In particular photo electron diffraction and normal incidence X ray standing wave techniques, newly exploiting the potential of third generation synchroton radiation sources in Berlin and Grenoble, will be used of concentrate on local adsorbate geometrics, exploiting chemical shift as well as elementary site specificity. The new medium energy ion scatttering facility at Daresbury along with STM at Warwick will provide characterisation and quantification of substrate restructuring induced by these adsorption phenomena. Theorectical total energy calculations using recently developed codes will be used to provide enchanced understanding of the physical processes underlying these structural conclusions, seeking to establish some predictive power in such phenomena.
