The proposed programme of research is to study the structure, interaction and dynamics of toplogical solitons in three space dimensions using a variety of analytical and numerical methods. The investigation will focus particularly on three types of soliton; skyrmions, BPS monopoles and knots.The investigation of skyrmions will continue in several directions but a fundamental issue is the identification of the stucture of higher charge skyrmions together with an understanding of the analogy with fulllerene chemistry. This will involve further numerical simulations but great use will also be made of the powerful new rational map approach. Applications to nuclei will also be addressed.The study of monopoles will be based upon an attempt to apply recent results and methods to the area of electric magnetic duality in supersymmetric quantum guage with a view to testing the predictions of duality. Further investigations of symmetric monopoles will also be conducted with particular emphasis upon the use of rational maps.There has been some recent interest in topological solitons which have the structure of closed strings. I propose to use numerical simulations to study the structure and interaction of such strings and in particular to address the issue of the existance and stability of knot-like solitons. An attempt will also be made to understand these configurations in terms of some form of rational map description. An application of these kind of toplogical structures to magnetic vortex rings will also be pursued.
