Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research aims to develop improved computational techniques for the solution of 3D large-displacement fluid-structure interaction problems. Two different approaches will be explored: The first approach is based on the parallel solution of the fully coupled system of algebraic equations which results from a simultaneous FE discretisation of the fluid and solid equations. The performance of direct and iterative solvers will be compared. The second approach will focus on the development of stable segregated solvers. The successfully developed techniques will then be applied to a variety of challenging 3D biomechanical fluid-structure interaction problems: (i) finite Reynolds number flows in collapsible tubes; (ii) the airway closure problem; (iii) the airway reopening problem; (iv) the dynamics of flexible artificial heart valves.
