Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal for a five-year Advanced Fellowship is for research in the field of optical instrumentation and its application to resolve engineering problems. The theme is high speed dynamic, full-field optical measurement, principally for applications in manufacturing technology. The programme will enable specific advances to be made in industrial vibration and shape measurement systems. Exemplary applications are proposed with existing industrial collaborators, including studies of engineered components (e.g. brake squeal analysis) and for in-process measurement and control (e.g. shape monitoring during laser induced forming). However, much wider application can be envisaged. The proposed work is novel, and brings together experience of instrumentation techniques and optical fibre technology. The research is timely, with the recent emergence of enabling technologies such as fast digital cameras with high data transmission rates, integrated optic modulators holographic optical elements and near infra-red array detectors. If the program is successful, it will enable a new generation of compact industrial optical sensors based on integrated optics to be developed.
