Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research is aimed at developing a rational design approach to smart polymer surfaces by a templating or imprinting route. The work will involve the synthesis, characterization, and selection of functionalized surfaces with specific chemistries, and the establishment of a predictive relationship for the first time between structures generated at the surface by an imprinting methodology and their action. A key component of this approach is the evaluation in a stepwise manner of the specific parameters needed to define such imprints and to use this knowledge to generate templated surfaces with superior properties. The work also aims to combine the flexibility inherent to synthetic chemistry with the selection and selfassembly processes which are a feature of the biological world. The research will be multidisciplinary in scope, and will involve aspects of organic and polymer synthesis, surface chemistry, biotechnology and materials science. The resultant materials will be evaluated as supports in the synthesis of complex molecules, as mediators of crystallization and as biocompatible or bioactive materials in medical applications.
