Summary on Grant Application Form
My proposed five year research programme aims to investigate the potential for using Photonic Crystal Fibre (PCF) in optical sensor systems. By building upon my existing links with Bath University, the UK's leading research group capable of fabricating PCF, I plan to cant' out the first systematic investigation of the potential of PCF for optical sensing. This is significant because PCF offers far greater control over the fibre properties than is available with doped fused silica fibres, greatly extending the type and performance of possible sensors. In particular I plan research leading to sensor systems that meet the needs of end users, for example miniaturised sensors for engineering research, structural monitoring, high power beam delivery for full field measurements, and for spectroscopic chemical detection schemes. This research programme will seize the opportunity available to exploit PCF for sensor applications which, to date, cannot otherwise be achieved.
