Summary on Grant Application Form |
Photonic crystal fibre (PCF) is a new and exciting type of optical fibre with an ordered array of air holes running along its length. The properties of this fibre are largely defined by the pattern of holes, rather than by the material used, which enables many properties to be realised that are not possible in conventional solid glass optical fibres. Fibres may even be fabricated in which light of certain wavelengths is guided within an enlarged air hole surrounded by an air-glass cladding. This project seeks to advance the technology of PCF, with a particular view to its application in non-linear optics. As PCF research is still in its infancy the project will include development of PCF fabrication techniques, driven by the requirements of non-linear applications, as well as the implementation of supercontinuum generation, Raman scattering and other non-linear processes. This contribution to the knowledgebase will help to keep the UK at the forefront of this new and important technology.
