Summary on Grant Application Form |
I will design de de novo peptides using natural and non-natural side-chains. I willcharacterise the thermodynamics and kinetics of their self-assembly using a methodology developed frommy previous work. Comparative self-assembling studies will be carried using biological amyloid-formingpeptides. The data will be rationalised with mathematical models, in collaboration with theoriticians. I willcharacterise the gelling, liquid crystalline and nanoparticle-forming properties of these systems. On the basisof these results, I will establish a relationship between peptide primary structure, P-sheet self-assembly andmaterial properties. I will thus learn to control the type of polymer (tape, ribbon, fibril, fibre, transmembrane p-barrel, surface coating) and its properties, by peptide design. I will explore and develop the technologicalapplications of these soft solid-like materials in particular in the fields of tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, dental care, biosensors, smart industrial fluids and separation of chiral molecules.
