|
Ultrasonic transducers with multiple active layers (stacks) have major performance advantages, particularly operating as transmitters. However, efforts have only recently begun to combine this structure with new materials such as piezocomposites. I propose a programme to study the design, fabrication and performance of stacks over frequencies from 20 kHz to 100 MHz. The work will be based on a common range of high performance design tools and basic structures, many of which will be novel. However, there will be substantial variation in materials, including new single crystal ferroelectrics and multilayer thin film piezo- and ferroelectrics, and fabrication methods. The work will be unique in the UK and internationally competitive, with strong international links. It will pave the way to more efficient and sensitive ultrasonic transducers with large existing international markets and novel applications in biomedicine, smart structures, sonar, nondestructive evaluation and high power process ultrasound.
