The project is aimed at the development of a new family of practical, compact, directly modulated sources of high-quality picosecond and femtosecond optical pulses using laser diodes and novel nonlinear fibre devices. The proposed work includes a detailed experimental and theoretical investigation of nonlinear transformation of a low-intensity signal from a directly-modulated laser diode by a passive fibre optic device, following appropriate amplification in a fibre or semiconductor amplifier.Initially, the novel single- and multiwavelength pulse sources will be implemented in the spectral range of 1.5 - 1.6um, where fibre amplifiers are available. System tests in ultrahigh capacity data transmission and data processing systems will be carried out at this stage.At the later stage, it is intended to cover significantly wider area of applications based on the use of high power picosecond laser diodes which will eliminate the need for a fibre amplifier. As a result, the operation wavelength of our sources will expand, mainly towards shorter wavelengths, and this will allow the use of the femtosecond sources in for other areas, most important of those being ultrafast spectroscopy, optical diagnostics techniques in medicine, teraherz-radiation imaging, ultrahigh-resolution microscopy. Availability of compact, robust femtosecond generators will make possible commercialisation of these powerful techniques on a massive scale.
