Summary on Grant Application Form |
The focus of this study will therefore be concerned with developing a computational model which can provide a detailed description of flow in the header section and through packed tubes having a small tube to particle diameter ratio. This will be used to explore how the resulting heat and mass transfer processes can be expected to interact with the heat generated by exothermic reaction taking place on the packing. This level of detail requires solution of the Navier-Stokes equations through the header and the irregular voidage of the packing together with the transport equations for heat and mass transfer (with reaction) by convection and dispersion in the fluid and by conduction and diffusion in the solid. The mathematical techniques and tools for doing this using the finite element technique havealready been developed(10,11,12).
