Summary on Grant Application Form
Our aim is to elucidate the particle-particle interaction mechanism(s) active in crystallisation from solution. We shall proceed by conducting:Microscopic studies using image analysis of aggregated crystalsMacroscopic, kinetic studies of dynamic particle-size distributions. We plan to carry out theoretical, numerical and experimental investigations to answer the following questions. How do aggregation rates change with solute supersaturation? How can the dependence of aggregation rates on particle size and shape, and fluid velocity field be (a) measured, (b) modelled? We shall study a model system, calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM), that has recently been shown to exhibit unexpected aggregation phenomena. We shall design experiments to identify the mechanisms of aggregation, allowing us to draw conclusions of general applicability to crystallising systems.
