Summary on Grant Application Form |
Although superlattice and quantum well devices in the ZnS/Se system have great potential for use eg in optical data storage, major problems with the growth of such structures have been encountered. We believe that further progress in the growth of such devices will not be possible without a better fundamental understanding of the processes that occur prior to and during growth. Major studies on mechanisms of growth, which would require substantial funding, could not be justified at present. However, since most of the problems appear to be associated with gas phase prereaction or precursor incompatabilities, relatively simple experiments directed towards understanding the gas phase chemistry of the precursors individually or as mixtures can be designed to identify the problems. Once the problems have been identified, new precursors can be synthesised to circumvent them. These studies will only require a modest amount of funding, but we believe they are crucial for the successful further development of these important systems. This proposal is concerned with such studies.
