Summary on Grant Application Form |
(1) To fill vital gaps in existing knowledge concerning piles in dense sand and low plasticity, low OCR, and clays (through field tests with instrumented piles). (2) To review and synthesise the information coming from parallel industrial research programmes. (3) To link the Imperial College research database with data obtained from full scale tests by performing calibration pile tests. (4) To use the information obtained concerning the effects of scale and soil composition to develop new practical design methods. The project has four main components: (1) A critical review and synthesis of all pile test data available in 1992. (2) Instrumented field pile tests on piles of various sizes in dense sand at Dunkirk, France. (3) Instrumented field pile tests at the normally consolidated LDP test site at Pentre, Shropshire. (4) Depending on funding, the project may be extended to incorporate tests at the EURIPIDES (which has very dense sand) and at Tilbrooke Grange (which has LDP and high OCR clay).
